How we teach

Play-based learningLiteracy-rich classroomsTeaching matched to each childICT as a learning toolEveryday assessmentMontessori methodsHands-on, multisensory activities
Real play, little screen time

Why we keep screens to a minimum

The early years are a time of rapid growth, and children learn most through moving, touching, talking and playing with others. So while we do use computers and technology as a teaching tool, screen time at Early Starters is kept very limited.

This follows the World Health Organization's advice for under-fives: no screen time for babies, no sitting in front of screens for one-year-olds, and no more than one hour a day for two- to four-year-olds, with less being better. Instead, the WHO recommends reading and storytelling with a caregiver.

  • Stories, songs and conversation with the Aunties every day
  • Building, puzzles, counting games and pretend play
  • Gardening, tidying up and helping, the Montessori way
  • Plenty of outdoor play on the climbing frame, slides and water park

Enrichment

Music, movement, languages and art

French

We partner with a local activity centre for French immersion sessions full of poems, songs and rhymes. Learning a language early has lifelong benefits and helps children connect with our francophone neighbours. The children love it!

Physical education

Every Friday begins with an energetic aerobics workout to modern music, led by an instructor. Then come sand and water play, imaginative play, art, puzzles and the climbing house.

Music, movement and drama

Children sing, listen to music and take part in Ghanaian cultural dance and drama. An organist leads a music session every week.

Art

Art builds memory, attention and new vocabulary. Children design, make, draw and exhibit their work, and learn to talk about their own art and their friends'.

Assessment

Keeping you close to your child's progress

We check children's progress regularly against developmental and learning milestones, and use what we find to plan teaching for each child.

  • Open Days in the second term for parents of children under three. Watch your child in class and chat with the Aunties about how they are getting on.
  • Parent conferences in the second term for Sunflower (Nursery 2) and Dandelion (KG1). Each child gets an individual report, and we agree practical ways to help at home and at school.
